Our Programs

Wildlife Crime Enforcement

Law of the Wild works closely with enforcement personnel to apply on-the-ground and at-sea anti-poaching technologies and strategies . Armed with evidence, our team notifies prosecutors, customs officials, and other authorities about illicit activity and provides briefing support in criminal and administrative cases. We complement these efforts by conducting training workshops for prosecutors, judges, enforcement officers, and legislators to bolster their capacity to combat environmental crimes and the illegal capture and trade of wildlife.

Protected Area Creation

Law of the Wild works closely with multiple partners to help create and fully re-wild protected areas. From efforts to establish  a vast wildlife corridor to helping draft protected area management plans, we employ solutions that address root causes, are based on sound science and socioeconomic realities, and provide multiple wildlife species with freedom to once again safely roam in their natural habitats.

International Law & Policy Development

Law of the Wild collaborates with Secretariats and signatories of treaties to ensure that treaties are properly drafted and implemented.  For example, our staff proposes revisions to treaty language and helps governments comply with treaty enforcement measures. Relevant treaties include the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS), Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), UN Convention Against Transnational Organized Crime (UNTOC), and the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

National Law & Policy Development

Law of the Wild analyzes environmental and wildlife laws, climate change policies, fisheries regulations, international treaty implementation strategies, and provisions relevant to at-risk species. Our team has analyzed and proposed key revisions to strengthen such legal regimes In over 30 countries across Africa, Asia, Latin America, Europe, and the Western Pacific. We also push for better cooperation between countries, by encouraging uniformity of regulations and enhancing communications between prosecutorial, judicial, environmental, and fisheries agencies.

United States Policy Implementation

Law of the Wild engages in selective litigation against United States agencies that fail to uphold environmental and wildlife laws.  Our team also wields the power of United States law to drive policy change in other countries, for example through the Marine Mammal Protection Act and the Lacey Act – both of which contain strong provisions that can stop the importation of illegally or otherwise improperly caught fish and wildlife products into the United States.
